Confirming (phase 3), - The Last Supper – First Part (step 22) - session 3

Jn 13:1-20

We will have most of this gospel (through verse 15) tomorrow night, and it pretty much speaks for itself.  So no interpretation here, lest I beat the reader over the head; just a couple of impressions/applications:

You shall never wash my feet. (8)

I despair of ever being made clean of mind and action. At times I am eager for Jesus to wash me clean, and at others I am too enamored of my uncleanliness. My first inclination is to believe this is very different from Peter's protestation, but maybe it really isn't.

Similarly: He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me. (18b)  Again and again.

I tell you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. (19)

He told them so much in advance that they were unprepared to hear, and it all served to make them strong in their faith later. He tells us so much about our lives in advance, too, about how the world works and how it doesn't, but we insist on going about our own way no matter how much the world proves that he has been right about it all along.
